After several years of Corollas and Vioses, automotive juggernaut Toyota has finally realized the growing viability of the compact car segment, and has resurrected a vehicle we last saw in the mid ‘90s. Fittingly, the car formerly known as the Echo now returns to the Philippine car scene, only now it’s known by its international name — the Yaris. So, what’s new? For one thing, it looks excellent. The Thai-sourced CBU Yaris is set to compete against the Honda Jazz and the Suzuki Swift, and its sport-themed design has it surging out of the proverbial gates. A massive-looking grille and large headlights complement the hot color-keyed Waydo-style chin spoiler, side skirts, and rear bumper. Exclusively designed 15-inch alloys brighten up the sides, and a large Yaris badge spruces up an otherwise plain rear hatch door. Under the hood, the Yaris sports a 1.5-liter four cylinder DOHC engine, equipped with Toyota’s VVT-i variable valve timing system. Almost identical to the Suzuki Swift’s own engine (the two companies have a technology-sharing agreement), the Yaris’ 1NZ-FE makes lO7hp and 142Nm of torque. Like the Swift, maximum power comes at high revs. But in a welcome development, the Yaris is offered with a manual transmission to squeeze out every bit of power. Tech guy? The interior is sure to please, with a huge assortment of easy-to-reach compartments and cubbyholes. The center console is dominated by a MP3/CD radio unit, and some of the switchgear looks like they came from the Suzuki parts bin as well. The rear seats do fold, but not to the extent or modularity that the Jazz’s do. On a recent test drive from Sta. Rosa to Tagaytay, the Yaris showed some real hot hatch potential. The handling wa a bit rubbery, but new sport-oriented tires can quickly remedy that. The engine may be top limit-oriented, but it honestly loves to rev. And of course, the Yaris’ short wheelbase added a great deal to its tossability and fun factor. If you’re in the market for something smart, fun, and different, give your neighborhood Toyota dealership a call.
